The Office of the Auditor General

The Office of the Auditor General was established in 1974 to independently evaluate state government programs and financial operations for the legislature. Established under R.I.G.L. § 22-13-1 et seq., the office performs a variety of auditing and accounting services for the State of Rhode Island’s departments and agencies. The office provides information to the General Assembly on the operation of state government and provides the General Assembly with an ongoing legislative oversight capability.

By statute, the Auditor General conducts and/or approves audits of state departments and agencies as required by federal programs. Audits are also conducted as required by Rhode Island statute or as directed by the Joint Committee on Legislative Services.

The primary responsibility of the Auditor General is to issue an annual report on the financial condition of the State of Rhode Island and all of its funds and entities. In addition, the office serves as a liaison between the state and municipalities on financial and accounting matters and serves in an oversight capacity for quasi-public corporations.
