House approves compassion centers amendments
Bill addresses governor’s previous objections to licensing marijuana distribution centers

Senate approves update to state fire code
The Rhode Island Senate today passed legislation that will update the state fire code and increase flexibility and options for businesses that must comply with it. The measure is designed to reduce the burdens placed on small businesses by the existing code while ensuring that public safety is still paramount and maintaining exemptions for certain existing structures.

Senate OKs bill to create "Homeless Bill of Rights"
The Senate today approved legislation that will establish a “Homeless Bill of Rights” in Rhode Island. If approved by the General Assembly and enacted into law, Rhode Island will be the first state in the nation to adopt such a measure. The bill will guarantee that no person’s rights, privileges or access to public services will be denied or abridged solely because he or she is homeless.

Senate approves changes to Hospital Conversion Act
Bill connected to proposed purchase of Landmark Medical Center
The Senate today passed changes to the Hospital Conversion Act that would eliminate a prohibition on for-profit companies acquiring more than one hospital in the state in a three-year period, but would require other provisions aimed at maintaining the hospital’s ties and contributions to the local community.

Newport Grand casino bills head to governor for signature
With the House of Representatives’ vote of approval today, the legislation asking state voters if they approve the addition of casino-style table games at Newport Grand will now be sent to the governor for his signature.
The legislation would place the issue before voters in November, when they will also face a similar question about the Twin River gaming facility. Passage would require approval by a majority of voters statewide and in the host communities.

Task force recommends working harder to keep children in state care from moving from school to school
Children in state care can and must be given more support and stability in their education, concluded a joint task force that studied the issue over the last year. The Joint Task Force on the Education of Children and Youth in the Care of the Department of Children, Youth, and Families issued its final report today, and recommended that the state work harder to prevent students in DCYF or other state custody from being moved from school to school.

House bill calls for 'Casino Impact Task Force'
House Minority Whip Rep. Joseph A. Trillo (R-Dist. 24, Warwick) and Rep. John M. Carnevale (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston) think Rhode Island decision-makers should have a handle on what impact Bay State gambling moves will have on Rhode Island, and specifically the revenues that the Ocean State derives from its gaming facilities. They have introduced a House Resolution, calling for creation of a five-member House commission to study and develop a strategy for minimizing the impact of Massachusetts gambling facilities on Rhode Island’s gambling revenue.
