Senator Dennis L. Algiere

Senate Minority Leader Dennis L. Algiere represents District 38, which covers Westerly and part of Charlestown. He is a Westerly native who graduated from Westerly High School and now works as a senior vice-president for The Washington Trust Company in downtown Westerly.
Algiere began his political career in 1990, when he was elected to the Westerly Town Council. He was elected Senator on November 3, 1992 and appointed Senate Deputy Minority Leader in 1995. In 1997, the Republican caucus elected him Minority Leader. In that capacity, he is an ex-officio member of all Senate committees.
The Minority Leader is heavily involved in his community. He serves on a number of boards and committees, including: The Westerly Hospital; Lions Club of Westerly; the Westerly-Pawcatuck Joint Development Task Force; the Westerly Old Town Hall Museum; President’s Advisory Council on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center; the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors; the President’s Council, Providence College; St. Pius X School; the Westerly Education Endowment Fund; and the Chorus of Westerly.
He is chairman of the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park capital campaign and of the St. Pius X capital campaign. He also serves as chairman of the Westerly Police Department building committee.
Algiere graduated from Westerly High School in 1978, earned a B.A. from Providence College in 1982, a M.S. degree from Northeastern University and J.D. from the Southern New England School of Law.
