Ocean State Center for Independent Living honors Rep. Naughton
STATE HOUSE -- The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL) has given Rep. Eileen S. Naughton its 2001 Legislative Award for her efforts to enhance the lives of Rhode Islanders with disabilities.
Representative Naughton, who represents District 37 in Warwick, was given the award during OSCIL’s annual meeting April 26 at the Warwick Public Library.
"I would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Ocean State Center for Independent Living for their honor," said Representative Naughton. "OSCIL is such an important organization that brings hope to the thousands of disabled persons living in Rhode Island."
Representative Naughton was honored because of her support of legislation for disabled persons, and for her interest in the organization, said Lorna Ricci, executive director of OSCIL.
"Eileen is a very dedicated and very genuinely concerned person," said Ricci. "When you share your concerns with her, she’ll help you. She’s a great listener who has a genuine interest for her community."
During her time in the General Assembly, Representative Naughton has sponsored legislation to create a blindness prevention program, reduce state park fees for disabled veterans, and supported independent living initiatives.
A non-profit organization based in Warwick, OSCIL provides various services to help disabled persons become independent. This could mean installing a wheelchair ramp in someone’s home, providing recreational activities, referring a person to a sign-language interpreter, or ensuring that state buildings are in compliance with the American With Disabilities Act.
