General Assembly renames fieldhouse for CCRI coach
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island General Assembly passed a bill (02-H 7810) that would rename the fieldhouse of the Knight campus of the Community College of Rhode Island to the “Vincent Cullen Fieldhouse.”
“You can’t talk about intercollegiate sports in Rhode Island without mentioning the good work that Vincent Cullen has contributed over the years,” said Representative Carter, who introduced the bill. “By officially recognizing Mr. Cullen, we are supporting the integral qualities of sportsmanship, honor and dedication that he possesses.”
Vincent Cullen is the only Director of Athletics and Men's Basketball Coach that the Community College of Rhode Island has known. Cullen has been instrumental with the overall implementation of intercollegiate athletics, intramural and community recreation programs. He was involved with the development and construction of the athletic fieldhouses, which are the cornerstone of all Community College programs.
Under his direction, Community College of Rhode Island Athletic teams have been extremely successful with nine different programs achieving regional championships and participating in national tournaments. He has been honored fourteen times as New England Junior College "Coach of the Year" and nine times as Colonial States Athletic Conference "Coach of the Year."
Additionally, Cullen has interactive coaching experience as a coach and clinician. Cullen is an active member of several national collegiate organizations which include: National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, American Association of Community Colleges, National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators and the National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Coaches Association.
With his numerous years of experience knowledge and dedication, Cullen is considered to be the cornerstone of athletic success for all Community College of Rhode Island programs. For all of his efforts, Cullen was inducted into the Community College of Rhode Island Hall of Fame.
The main sponsor of the legislation (02-H 7810) was Representative Kenneth Carter, who represents sections of North Kingstown, Exeter and South Kingstown. Representative Melvoid J. Benson, who represents parts of North Kingstown, co-sponsored the bill. The bill passed both chambers of the General Assembly and will be forwarded to Governor Lincoln Almond for his consideration.
