Rep. Lancia responds to vote on RhodeMap RI
State House – Representative Robert Lancia (Dist. 16, Cranston) announced today that legislation will be submitted to prevent RhodeMap RI from mandating content in locals’ comprehensive plans particularly as it impacts local land use and zoning ordinances.
Rep. Lancia stated: “Rhode Island’s Statewide Planning Council voted on a very important matter on Dec. 11. The members of the Council unanimously approved RhodeMap RI as an element of our state’s official State Guide Plan.”
“With that vote, all local city and towns’ comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances are obliged under general law to be sure that their own comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances are consistent with this new element of our State Guide Plan”, said Rep. Lancia.
‘The problem is that RhodeMap RI’s sections that reference land use and zoning are carefully aligned with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s goal, mission and intent for land use and zoning. Most folks recognize that local authority over these matters is important to retain.
