Senate Republican Caucus asks to reopen I-95 Welcome Center
STATE HOUSE – The Rhode Island Senate Republican caucus has asked the Department of Transportation and the new Secretary of Commerce to investigate feasibility of reopening the I-95 North Welcome Center in Richmond. In a letter to DOT Director Michael P. Lewis and Secretary of Commerce Stefan Pryor, the caucus noted that reopening the center would be a positive step in bolstering the Ocean State’s image as business- and tourist-friendly.
“The welcome center sits in a very prominent location, and its nearly four-year closure gives Rhode Island the appearance of being less than welcoming to anyone traveling Interstate 95,” the letter said.
Senate Minority Leader Dennis L. Algiere, (R-Dist. 38, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown), said the caucus is interested in working with the DOT and Commerce to explore cost-effective ways to reopen the center.
“I look forward to finding innovative ways to reopen the center,” Algiere said.
