6/2/2015 Kettle bill allowing direct deposit for state income tax returns passes Senate
STATE HOUSE – The full Senate Tuesday unanimously approved legislation that would allow all Rhode Island state income tax filers to have their return direct deposited.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Nicholas D. Kettle, (R-Dist. 21, Coventry, Foster, Scituate, West Greenwich), said the legislation would extend the convenience of having tax returns directly deposited to all taxpayers.

“Approximately 20 percent of Rhode Island income tax filers use paper to file their tax returns,” Kettle said.  “Those taxpayers then have to wait for a paper check to be processed and mailed before they can deposit their return.  This bill would ensure that no matter which way you choose to file your return, you can elect to have the funds deposited into the bank instead of waiting for a check.”  Kettle said allowing the direct deposit would mirror the federal system which permits paper filers to have their refund directly deposited.

Senate bill (2015-S 114) now goes before the House Finance Committee for consideration.
