Rep. Jacquard homestead exemption legislation passes House
STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives tonight passed Rep. Robert B. Jacquard’s legislation (2016-H 7674) that allows owner-occupied personal property used as a residence to qualify for a homestead exemption.
The measure, which passed with a vote of 73-0, now heads to the Senate for consideration.
“The homestead exemption is crucial to many of our state’s residents who reside in their property and contribute to their surrounding communities,” said Representative Jacquard (D-Dist. 17, Cranston). “This legislation provides those property owners an easier path to claim their homestead exemption, saving them numerous dollars in the process.”
The legislation also states that the homestead exemption would be subordinate to a mortgage encumbering the property when the mortgage was signed by all owners of the property.
