Metts elected Senate President Pro Tempore
STATE HOUSE — The Senate today elected Sen. Harold M. Metts to serve as its President Pro Tempore for the 2017-2018 General Assembly session.
The President Pro Tempore presides over the Senate in the absence of the President.
“I am deeply honored that my colleagues in the Senate have put their faith in me and am very grateful to President of the Senate Paiva Weed, Majority Leader Ruggerio and all the members of the Senate for electing me to this leadership post. With the Lord guiding my hand, I will do my utmost to uphold the high standards we’ve come to expect of Senate leadership, and will work hard to help move our state ahead with love for our Creator and each other,” said Senator Metts (D-Dist. 6, Providence).
Having been first elected to the Senate in 2004, Senator Metts is serving his seventh term. He previously served as a state representative from 1984 to 1998. A retired assistant principal for the Providence School Department and a veteran of the Rhode Island Army National Guard, he serves as a deacon at the Congdon Street Baptist Church.
