5/1/2017 Media Advisory: Health care overhaul bills to be heard
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will meet tomorrow for hearings on two proposals to overhaul health insurance in Rhode Island.

The meeting is scheduled Tuesday, May 2, at the rise of the Senate (around 4:30 p.m.) in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

 The committee is scheduled to hear:
  • 2017-S 0154 — Sponsored by Sen. Jeanine Calkin (D-Dist. 30, Warwick), this bill would create a single-payer health care system in Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Comprehensive Health Insurance Program (RICHIP), funded by Medicaid, Medicare and premiums via a trust fund, with a benefit schedule based on current Medicare coverage for services, goods and prescription drugs and provider reimbursement at Medicare rates.
  • 2017-S 0831 — This bill sponsored by Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Joshua Miller (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence) would enact the provisions of the Affordable Care Act in state law to protect to Rhode Island consumers from changes at the federal level should Congress repeal or weaken the law.
The committee is also scheduled to meet Thursday, May 4, at the rise of the Senate session in the Senate Lounge for hearings on bills including:
  • 2017-S 0446 — Sponsored by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence), this bill would change the legal definitions of “smoking” and “retail tobacco store” to include electronic smoking and related devices.
  • 2017-S 0777 — This bill sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin (D-Dist. 1, Providence) would require an automated external defibrillator (AED) and qualified person to administer an AED at all public places capable of holding 300 people or more.
