5/23/2017 Sen. Coyne honors Barrington hockey team at State House
Despite state championship, team is on chopping block at financial town meeting tomorrow
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Cynthia A. Coyne (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) honored the Division II state champions Barrington High School boys’ hockey team at the State House today.

The honor comes a day before Barrington’s annual financial town meeting, at which voters will face a budget proposal that would eliminate funding for the hockey team. Also on the chopping block are the girls’ hockey team, the wrestling and gymnastics teams, freshman teams and all middle school sports, as well as home economics programs, some foreign language classes and music, art and library staff.

The boys’ hockey team finished the regular season in first place with a 14-4 record, outscoring opponents 85 to 33. In the playoffs, the Eagles dispatched the PCD/St. Rays/Wheeler Co-op team in two games, then beat Ponaganset in the second round. Barrington clinched the title in the finals over the team’s archrivals, the Rogers/Middletown/Rocky Hill Co-Op.

The team, accompanied by Head Coach Kevin Croke, Assistant Coach Joseph Sturm and Volunteer Coaches Nick Marra and Tod Sirmalis, was honored in both the Senate and the House during each chamber’s session.
