6/19/2017 HHS slates hearings on health insurance commissioner, bills concerning the deaf, chiropractic coverage
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will meet this week on numerous bills concerning assistance for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, chiropractic coverage and the nomination of a new health insurance commissioner.

The committee meets tomorrow, Tuesday, June 20, at the rise of the Senate session (around 4:45 p.m.) in the Senate lounge on the second floor of the State House on numerous matters concerning the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

 Among the bills scheduled for hearings and possible consideration are:
  • 2017-S 0498 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Nicholas D. Kettle (R-Dist. 21, Coventry, Foster, Scituate, West Greenwich) would require establishments selling drinks or food via drive-through windows to install equipment to assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing in ordering and train personnel to use it.
  • 2017-S 0644 — Sponsored by Sen. Stephen R. Archambault (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston), this bill would require insurance plans to cover effective communication access services between deaf patients and health care providers.
  • 2017-S 0645 — Also sponsored by Senator Archambault, this bill requires movie theaters to provide open captioning for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
The committee is also scheduled Thursday, June 22 at the rise of the Senate session in the Senate lounge. At that meeting, the committee will discuss advice and consent on the nomination of Marie L. Ganim as Health Insurance Commissioner. It is also scheduled to have a hearing and possibly a vote on:
  • 2017-S 0789 — Sponsored by Sen. Frank Lombardo III (D-Dist. 25, Johnston), this bill would requires insurance reimbursement for chiropractic diagnosis and treatment if the plan includes medical treatment for pain.
