8/1/2017 MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate to meet to reconsider budget; Senate Finance Committee to hear legislation on auto tax impact
STATE HOUSE — The Rhode Island Senate is scheduled to meet Thursday to reconsider the FY 2018 state budget. Prior to the session, the Senate Finance Committee will meet to consider legislation that would require the director of revenue to issue annual reports on the fiscal impact of the repeal of the auto excise tax.

The Senate is scheduled to meet Thursday, Aug. 3, at 4 p.m. in the Senate chamber on the second floor of the State House. On the calendar will be the governor’s proposed budget (2017-H 5175Aaa).

The Senate Finance Committee is scheduled to convene Thursday, Aug. 3 at 3 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House. The committee will consider legislation (2017-S 1011) introduced by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, Providence, North Providence) that would require the director the Department of Revenue to make recommendations concerning the financial feasibility of the motor vehicle excise tax phase-out. The director would make annual reports to the General Assembly, beginning on Jan. 1, 2021.

If the committee recommends passage of the legislation, then the Senate is expected to take up the measure that same day. The Senate Committee on Finance is chaired by Sen. William J. Conley Jr. (D-Dist. 18, East Providence, Pawtucket).
