2/8/2018 Sen. Lombardi announces reduction of speed limit on part of Scituate Ave. in Cranston, yield signs at I-295 onramps
STATE HOUSE — Sen. Frank S. Lombardi (D-Dist. 26, Cranston) has announced that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation has reduced the speed limit on a portion of Scituate Avenue in Cranston. The department also placed yield signs on the onramps to Interstate 295 at Plainfield Pike.

“The speed of traffic on Scituate Avenue has concerned me for a while,” said Senator Lombardi, who chairs the Senate Committee on Rules, Government Ethics and Oversight. “While much of it runs through a rural area, the part approaching Comstock parkway becomes dense and residential, with many driveways opening right out onto the roadway.”

Last October, Senator Lombardi asked the State Traffic Commission to review the feasibility of implementing traffic calming measures on Comstock Parkway. After approving the study, the commission determined that due to the nature and character of the roadway, with respect to residences, driveways and side streets, a speed limit reduction was warranted.

Signs have been placed reducing the speed limit from 45 to 35 mph on Scituate Avenue from Comstock Parkway to Gray Coach Lane. At the same time, the State Traffic Commission noted that traffic entering the onramp to Interstate 295 from both directions of Plainfield Pike were forced to merge with no right-of-way assigned. To mitigate traffic conflict, RIDOT installed yield signs and pavement markings.

“I appreciate the prompt response to this safety issue from both the State Traffic Commission and the Department of Transportation,” said Senator Lombardi. “Not only does it improve traffic flow, but helps ensure the safety of all Rhode Islanders who use this heavily traveled roadway.”
