2/3/2020 House Environment Committee to consider bills addressing disposables, PFAs
STATE HOUSE – The House Environment and Natural Resources Committee will hold hearings Thursday on several bills to reduce the use of disposable items and address chemicals in food packaging and drinking water.

The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, Feb. 6, at the rise of the House session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House. On its calendar are:
  • 2020-H 7306  — Sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), this bill would prohibit retailers from providing single-use plastic checkout bags.
  • 2020-H 7163 — This bill sponsored by Environment and Natural Resources Committee Chairman David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston) would prohibit food service establishments from providing plastic straws unless requested by the customer.
  • 2020-H 7164 — Also sponsored by Chairman Bennett, this bill would prohibit food service establishments from using disposable foam food packaging or plastic stirrers.
  • 2020-H 7307 — Sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown), this bill would prohibit the use of PFAs — manmade chemicals linked to cancer, developmental delays and other health problems — in food packaging.
  • 2020-H 7216 — This bill sponsored by Rep. June S. Speakman (D-Dist. 68, Warren, Bristol) would require the Department of Health to take action to establish maximum contaminate levels of PFAs in public drinking water.
