1/23/2019 Rep. Ackerman appointed chairwoman of new House Committee on Conduct
STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston) has appointed Rep. Mia Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln) to serve as chairman of the newly created House Conduct Committee.

“I am honored to lead this new committee that will play such an important role in keeping all members of the House of Representatives accountable,” said Representative Ackerman, who was also reappointed Deputy Majority Leader. “The people of Rhode Island deserve to know that their representatives will be held to the highest level of ethical behavior.”

The Committee on Conduct was created by the House of Representatives when it adopted the House rules for the new session. The panel is tasked with policing the ethical conduct of members of the House of Representatives. It reviews complaints against House members, holds hearing and makes recommendations.

In addition, Representative Ackerman was appointed to serve on the House Health, Education and Welfare, Small Business, and Special Legislation committees.

The Health, Education and Welfare Committee deliberates matters relating to the health care system, public education, human services, children and families, and animal welfare. The Small Business Committee reviews legislation relating to the streamlining of licenses and permits, eliminating or decreasing bureaucratic steps and delays and uncoordinated or duplicative reviews and filings, and reducing associated added costs to businesses.

The Committee on Special Legislation handles legislation pertaining to constitutional amendments, commissions, resolutions and issues that do not fall within the purview of other standing committees.

Representative Ackerman was first elected as a state representative in November 2012.
