MEDIA ADVISORY: Nesselbush brings International Women’s Day to State House
STATE HOUSE – Putting a spotlight on the smart, driven women of Rhode Island, Sen. Donna M. Nesselbush (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, North Providence) is proudly hosting a state celebration of the United Nations-recognized International Women’s Day.
The event, which will honor eight prominent women in all three branches of government, will take place in the governor’s State Room on Thursday, March 7, at the Rise of the Senate (approximately 4:30 p.m.).
Among the women being honored are President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed, Rep. Elaine A. Coderre (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket), Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts, Treasurer Gina Raimondo, R.I. Supreme Court Associate Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg, Superior Court Presiding Justice Alice B. Gibney, District Court Chief Judge Jeanne E. Lafazia and Family Court Chief Judge Haiganush R. Bedrosian.
The official theme for International Women’s Day this year is “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.” It is a day to reflect on the achievements we have made to date and the obstacles that remain. It is also a day for acknowledging the strides the world has taken in advancing women’s rights, freedoms and protections.
The United Nations has recognized and celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 since 1975.
