5/22/2014 Governor signs bill adding adjutant general to Veterans’ Services Strategic Plan Advisory Committee
STATE HOUSE – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee signed into law a bill adding the adjutant general of the Rhode Island National Guard to the Rhode Island Veterans’ Services Strategic Plan Advisory Committee.

“The Rhode Island adjutant general is the commander of the state’s National Guard and should be allowed to play an instrumental role in how the state delivers services and support to veterans and their families,” said Rep. Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43, Johnston), lead sponsor of the House bill (2014-H 7636). “The commander can certainly provide some insight into what our brave young men and women are facing abroad and at home when they return. It is in the state’s best interest to have the most well-rounded advisory panel available to ensure that government services are effective and truly helpful.”

The advisory committee is a 13-member panel responsible for creating and maintaining a five-year plan for the dispensing of veterans services and support through government departments and agencies.

Representatives Raymond E. Gallison Jr. (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth), Mary Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) and Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) cosponsor the House bill. Sen. Walter S. Felag Jr. (D-Dist. 10, Warren, Bristol, Tiverton) sponsored the legislation (2014-S 2423) in the Senate.
