Representative Liana Cassar

House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare

House Committee on Small Business

Representative Liana Cassar (D) was first elected to represent District 66 in Barrington and East Providence in November 2018. She is a member of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare and the House Committee on Small Business.

In her first term in the House, Representative Cassar cosponsored and supported numerous efforts to foster inclusion and more diversity in government, to provide greater access to health care for all and to cultivate economic and social justice and equity.

She sponsored a bill to require expanded disclosure of ingredients in personal care products, as well as the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act, which would assure that the rights codified in the Reproductive Privacy Act would extend to all Rhode Islanders regardless of insurer. She also advocated for a 2019 budget amendment that would have provided funding to address chronic homelessness in the state, which would have leveraged federal dollars to address this critical issue.

She has worked in the health care and public health sectors in Rhode Island and Massachusetts holding various positions focused on veterans’ health issues, public health in low-income communities, reproductive health and health care technology. She served in the Peace Corps as a community development worker in Costa Rica from 1992 to 1995.

She is a graduate of John Jay High School in Katonah, N.Y., and holds a Master’s degree in public health from Boston University, an MBA from Simmons College, and bachelor’s degrees in communications and Spanish from University of Connecticut.

Representative Cassar runs her own strategy and operations consulting business, Cassar Consulting, which provides technical assistance, coaching and support for mission-driven and women-led organizations and ventures. She has served as co-chair of the Barrington Democratic Town Committee for the past 3 years and is currently an Advisory Board Member for the Center for Health and Justice Transformation. She also serves as a coach for the business incubator program at Social Enterprise Greenhouse.

She and her family live in Barrington.
