Karen L. MacBeth (D) serves District 52 in Cumberland and was first elected in November 2008. She is the chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee and is a member of both the House Finance and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
Representative MacBeth was a prime sponsor of legislation to repeal the state’s tourism tax, which was accomplished with the enactment of the Fiscal Year 2013 budget. She was cosponsor of a bill enacted in 2012 creating a commission to designate monuments for historical and cultural significance. She also cosponsored a law passed in 2013 requiring state criminal background checks for school volunteers with direct, unmonitored contact with children on school premises.
She was a member of the Cumberland School Committee from 2006 to 2008.
Representative MacBeth is the principal of Harris Elementary School in Woonsocket. She was previously a teacher in the elementary, middle school and special education levels and was the supervisor of elementary student services in Woonsocket schools.
She is a graduate of Rhode Island College with bachelor of science degrees in elementary and special education. She earned a master of arts degree from Providence College and has completed post-graduate coursework in administration and law.
Representative MacBeth has served as an assistant swim coach at the YMCA and she is a member of the Board of Directors at Candleberry Chapel.
Born on Sept. 23, 1967, Representative MacBeth has three children, Mary, Abigail and Robert.
