Representative Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown and Narragansett) was first elected in June 2015, after winning a special election to fill the vacant District 33 seat. She serves as the second vice-chairwoman of the House Committee on Judiciary and is a member of the House Committee on Labor as well as the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.
During the 2018 legislative session, Representative McEntee sponsored a bill that became law that speeds up the divorce process for Rhode Island residents. She also successfully sponsored legislation that updated Rhode Island’s shell fishing laws to be compliant with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program.
In 2017, Representative McEntee was the sponsor of a successful bill that protects scholarly research by faculty members of the state’s higher education institutions from public records requests until the researchers are prepared to publish their work. She also sponsored a bill that became law which requires all court-appointed special advocate volunteers to pass a Department of Children, Youth and Families clearance, as well as a national criminal background check, before qualifying for appointment by the court.
During the 2016 legislative session, Representative McEntee sponsored several bills that became law. Among those was legislation granting the Narragansett Town Council the authority to adopt a homestead exemption ordinance, similar to those in effect in other communities in the state. The exemption applies to home-owning taxpayers who actually reside at the taxable property. Other successful bills amended the composition of the Governor’s Workforce Board to add one additional employer seat and one seat representing the Office of Rehabilitation Services, as well as a bill which specifies the procedures of unclaimed savings bonds.
Representative McEntee served as a member of the South Kingstown Town Council from 2008 until June 2015. She is an attorney at law, licensed in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She is a former Special Assistant Attorney General in Rhode Island and a former assistant city solicitor and prosecutor for the City of Warwick.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Representative McEntee has lived in Wakefield and Bonnet Shores for more than 30 years. She is married to Mike McEntee, a former State Representative, and they have three children: Meg, Mickey and Rory.
