James N. McLaughlin (D) represents District 57 in Cumberland and Central Falls. He was first elected in November 2010.
McLaughlin met extensively during 2017-18 with officials from the Department of Transportation — meetings that ultimately resulted in repairs and repaving of Marshall Avenue in Cumberland. Another set of meetings led to the repair and repaving of 35.8 miles of roads in Cumberland, including Diamond Hill Road, Broad Street, Nate Whipple Highway, High Street and Manville Hill Road.
In 2016, Representative McLaughlin sponsored legislation that increases the cost-efficiency of the state’s school bus transportation plans. The new law allows school districts to maintain an annual registry for students requiring bus transportation to school. The purpose of this registration is to assist each district’s bus transportation plan to be more cost-efficient, saving substantial money.
In the 2013-2014 legislative session, Representative McLaughlin supported new laws to toughen penalties for gang-related crime and put Rhode Islanders back to work. A member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Representative McLaughlin served in the United States Army and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Representative McLaughlin is a member of the South Attleboro Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Fatima Holy Name Society and the St. Thomas Council. He is also a certified auto body and automotive repair technician. He was born on Nov. 6, 1943, and is married to Gilda Rose McLaughlin. They have three children.
