Representative Larry Valencia
Member, House Health, Education and Welfare Committee
Larry Valencia (D) is serving the people of District 39 since first being elected in November 2010. After redistricting was enacted in 2012, the communities he represents are Richmond, Exeter and Hopkinton. He is a member of the House Health, Education and Welfare Committee.
In 2012, he sponsored successful legislation protecting farmlands. He also led the legislative efforts to dredge the Charlestown Breachway and assist the Alton Water District.
He has been a member of the American Medical Writers Association and Common Cause of Rhode Island, is past president of Operation Clean Government, and is a former coach for both Hopkinton Recreation Girls Basketball and Chariho Girls Softball.
He served on the Richmond Zoning Board of Review from 2000 to 2012 and has been on the Richmond Economic Development Commission since 2007, serving as its chairman from 2008 to 2010. He was also chairman of the Richmond Home Rule Charter Commission from 2007 to 2008.
Representative Valencia received his bachelor’s from Charter Oak College in 1988 and his master’s from St. John’s University in 1997. He is self-employed as a freelance medical and technical writer.
He was born on July 29, 1958. He lives in Richmond with his wife Patty, and they have three children: son Lee, and daughters Jacqueline and Xaviera.
